Azhar Ali showed dogged resistance to deny Australian bowlers his wicket, even as they showed great discipline on a batting-friendly track. Josh Hazlewood struck with the last ball of first session, removing Babar Azam.

After a cautious start, Sami Aslam was sent packing by Nathan Lyon in the first over of spin on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test.

Azhar Ali scored a half-century, brought up 1000 Test runs in 2016 and remained unbeaten on 66 when the teams went in for Tea break.

After Lunch, Jackson Bird rose to prominence, as he cleaned up Younis Khan with a peach that curved back in slightly, off the seam. This ended a key 51-run stand between Younis and Azhar.

Rain washed out the final session, leaving Pakistan on 164 for 4 at stumps on Day 1.

Bird then sent Misbah-ul-Haq packing, courtesy an experty-taken catch at forward short leg by Nic Maddinson.
