Elgar and Amla were then involved in a 66-run stand.

Skipper Faf du Plessis resurrected South Africa with a fruitful partnership but fell for 38.

Bavuma's wicket put Sri Lanka on top again.

Elgar though went on to reach his sixth Test century and was dismissed for 129.

De Kock scored an unbeaten half-century and added 103 with Elgar to help SA post 297 for 6 at stumps.
