England's 81st Test captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bat in southampton, as international cricket returned from a 117-day hiatus

Stuart Broad was left out in favour of playing both Mark Wood and Jofra Archer together. The last time England played a home Test without Stuart Broad was against West Indies in Edgbaston in 2012.

It was a damp start to cricket in Southampton, with only 17.4 overs possible. Both the morning and the evening sessions were washed out

Cricket was played in front of empty stands, with new rules in place. No saliva was permitted on the ball and teams had upto three reviews per innings.
