Marnus Labuschagne though continued to work through the gears and kept Australia's scoreboard ticking.

Labuschagne completed his 8th Test ton and his 7th in 18 home Test matches.

At the other end, Steve Smith moved to a rather brisk half-century of his own.

Labuschagne ended the opening day 154* with his partnership with Smith reaching 142*. Australia were 293/2 at Stumps.
