We have come to the end of a juicy contest, one that the deserving team won. Kohli did all that he could, alas the other batters failed to put up a fight for India. Not too many positives that India can take from their batting bar their captain's show, bowling was top notch though. England's batting came a cropper too, but they found a different hero every time the need arose. Sam Curran, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and today Ben Stokes got the job done. What the Edgbaston Test does now is it sets up the series nicely. Not too big a gap between the first and the second Test, join us for all of that. Until then, let those nerves relax...

Narrowest defeat for India by runs:

12 v Pak, Chennai, 1999

16 v Pak, Bengaluru, 1987

16 v Aus, Brisbane, 1977

31 v Eng, Edgbaston, 2018*

Lowest targets India failed to chase down:

120 vs WI, Bridgetown, 1997

176 vs SL, Galle, 2015

195 vs Eng, Edgbaston, 2018 *

208 vs SA, Cape Town, 2018

It is all over, England win the first Test by 31 runs

Stokes gets the final wicket, quite deservedly. He did the major damage on the final day, removed Kohli and from thereon, it was just too much for the Indian tail to deal with. Hardik fought but fell to an awaygoing delivery, played far away from the body to hand an edge to Cook at first slip.

Root makes a mad dash towards the bowler, England are chuffed but they will have to hold onto their celebrations for a while. Handshakes begin... The look on Kohli's face says it all - so near yet so far... again!

England take a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series

Four dots in a row, Hardik needs to retain strike. Stokes and Root in a meeting... How well can Hardik replicate Virat's shielding skills from the first innings?

Well, Rashid is into the attack...

And he sets Ishant up beautifully with legbreaks and then the googly comes through. Ishant is half-forward and misses the defense, hit in line and he is a dead duck. The onfield umpire doesn't think so and England review immediately. Decision reversed. India lose their ninth, still 40 away...

Verbal war is on as well...

Ishant gets two boundaries now, a controlled steer first before being bombarded with a raging short ball. That takes the outside half and goes flying over third slip for four. Some words exchanged, Ishant first, and then Hardik joins him in taking on England, verbally...

England won't mind riling them up and earn a wicket through an arrogant shot. Ishant identifies that and quickly pats Hardik on the back and cools him down... Assuming so...

The fourth time Bairstow has had five dismissals in an innings.

Scoring 50+ in each innings where no one else went past 49 (India):

D Vengsarkar 61 & 102* v Eng, Leeds, 1986

S Tendulkar 116 & 52 v Aus, MCG, 1999

S Tendulkar 76 & 65 v Aus, Mumbai WS, 2001

R Dravid 81 & 68 v WI, Kingston, 2006

MS Dhoni 77 & 74 v Eng, Edgbaston, 2011

V KOHLI 149 & 51 v Eng, Edgbaston, 2018

England STOKED as Kohli exits:

Rare poor shot from Kohli one can say, moving far too across the stumps trying to find the scoring opportunity, misses the flick and he was a dead duck. Opts for the review just for the heck of it, all reds. India lose Kohli and the remaining hope...

Shami is gone as well, a tailender special nudge outside off and the 'keeper makes no mistake. India lose their eighth, still 53 away...

Most runs in a Test by an Indian captain in England:

212 MAK Pataudi (64 & 148), Leeds, 1967

200 V KOHLI (149 & 51*) this Test

190 M Azharuddin (179 & 11), Manchester, 1990

167 S Ganguly (68 & 99),Trent Bridge, 2002

And this...
