Jaffer, Muzumdar among applicants for Mumbai coaching job

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), having recently started the search for a new coach, has zeroed in on potential candidates for the position that was vacated by Ramesh Powar. The Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC), consisting of Vinod Kambli, Nilesh Kulkarni and Jatin Paranjpe, will conduct the interviews in the next few days.

"We have shortlisted nine names and the interviews will take place this week," an MCA official told Cricbuzz. The association has got a response from a wide range of candidates who are both relatively beginners in coaching and veterans in the field. Monday (May 24) was the last day for the submission of applications.

Cricbuzz has learnt that former India all-rounder and veteran coach Balwinder Singh Sandhu has thrown his hat in the ring while youngsters like Wasim Jaffer and Amol Muzumdar too are in the fray. Former India spinner Sairaj Bahutule, former Mumbai coach Sulakshan Kulkarni, Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal and Vinod Raghvan are the other applicants.

Muzumdar was initially thought to be the MCA's preferred choice. The former Mumbai captain had come close to being appointed last year itself but owing to a dispute between the CIC, then headed by Lalchand Rajput, and the officials of the associations, Powar got the job eventually.
