India ride on Pujara's batting recalibration

In his first media interaction with Yorkshire back in 2015, Cheteshwar Pujara was plainly asked to describe himself. Sat in the sun on a white fold-up seat below the Headingley pavilion, the 25-year-old didn't quite have a coherent answer. "It's difficult to describe oneself as a person or a cricketer," he said shyly, before adding, "I would just like to play the way I know to play." And so he did, averaging 52.8 across four games.

Cut forward to three years later, when Pujara's back for his second county stint with the club. He's sat indoors this time, presenting a more pensive face that is not entirely explained by his new-look beard. The unsmiling demeanour showed up in his numbers too that season, returning an average of 14.33 across six games. Unfortunately for him, that wasn't quite the end of a wretched phase. Six weeks later, he would be dropped by India on grounds that he'd picked up a bad posture at the crease during his county stint.
