Contrary to popular terminology, there are no dead rubbers in the IPL. Even if a team is no longer in the running for a Playoffs berth, the owners and franchise managements impel their players to avoid the wooden spoon if a respectable finish is not possible. The final standing is such a major aspect that an owner had once insisted that the salary of the coach must be slashed for finishing last. The owner's logic was the coach was handed a bonus after the team had done well in the previous year.
