The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the extra time stipulated for an IPL match by an hour. All IPL games from Tuesday (May 20) will have an extra waiting period of 120 minutes. Previously, it used to be just an hour and the BCCI said the change in playing conditions (Clause 13.7.3) is coming into force with immediate effect.

"Previously, the Match Playing Conditions stipulated that for league matches, a period of 60 minutes of extra time was available to commence the match in the event of a delay. In playoff matches, this time was extended to 120 minutes. In light of the current threat of rain and the revised schedule, the IPL Governing Council has decided that effective May 20, 2025, all IPL matches (including league matches) will have a period of 120 minutes of extra time to commence the match," the BCCI said in a communique to the franchises.

It further said, "As you are aware, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has commenced after a brief hiatus. Due to the hiatus, the IPL will conclude on June 3, 2025. With the early onset of the monsoon and the extended IPL period, several matches are at risk of being affected by rain. Consequently, the IPL governing council has made adjustments to the Match Playing Conditions," it said and went on to add, "Accordingly, Clause 13.7.3 of the IPL Conditions stands suitably modified for IPL 2025 only."

Clause 13.7.3 in the playing conditions states, "Where the start of play is delayed or play is suspended for any reason then extra time of (i) up to sixty minutes shall be available for each IPL regular season match; and (ii) up to one hundred and twenty minutes for any of the play-off matches.

"For the avoidance of doubt, if extra time is required to be used, it will be taken in the following sequence. In the event of a delayed start or interruption, the provision of sixty minutes (or one hundred and twenty minutes for play-off matches) extra time is to be used first, followed by the time allocated for 'time outs' and then the reduction in the innings change interval (if applicable).

"For clarity, the changeover period (maximum 10 mins) for a Super Over after the main match is not to be taken into account when applying any permitted extra time available.

"For the play-off matches, in addition to the extra time referred to above, there may be reserve days (on which an incomplete play-off match shall be completed). Further details of reserve day arrangements will be confirmed when the 2025 match schedule is announced."
