England have dominated proceedings completely but South Africa have managed to fight back with the bat. Amla's fifty has led the way along with a solid AB de Villiers. This could be a long batting day unless the pitch offers some respite for the bowlers. England have the added advantage of scoreboard pressure and will be looking to capitalise on it.

39th Test fifty for AB de Villiers. The morning session has been a slow but resolute one for the man. He gets there with a dance-down and drive off Moeen Ali. This partnership is starting to look threatening now.
Finn and Anderson have been testing both batsmen consistently with good lines. So far, so good for South Africa. Amla and de Villiers have managed to hold fort in the first half hour even though the runs have come only in a trickle. No easy runs on offer and so it makes for an interesting view.
