The DRS - and the umpiring - have been under the spotlight throughout the series. After the second Test was littered with contentious overturns, critics have lined up and questioned the veracity of the DRS.
On the opening day of the third Test, the technology was again under the microscope after England opener Mark Stoneman's controversial dismissal. He was originally given not out after trying to evade a Starc thunderbolt and replays confirmed there was no hot spot mark. However, there was faint noise on 'snicko', which was enough for third umpire Aleem Dar to pull the trigger.
Television commentators were baffled with Dar's haste with replays that appeared inconclusive, with it showing the ball hitting Stoneman's glove which was off the bat handle. It looked very much like the dismissal of Michael Kasprowicz to hand England a memorable two-run victory in Edgbaston during the classic 2005 Ashes series.
Dismayed at the decision, an aggrieved Joe Root, the England captain, gently punched the door in the team dressing room to let his feelings known.
