Flat end to Boxing Day Test

The captains shake hands and off they go. What a knock from Smith. Agreed the pitch has been on the easier side, but it took hours of concentration on great determination to take the side to safety. Australia remain undefeated, but England put in a morale boosting performance under their belts.

Onto Sydney then! See you there...

Hundred number 23 for Smith

It seemed inevitable from the moment Smith stepped out today. He notches up hundred number 23, another special effort resulting in Australia saving the game.

Match heads towards draw; Smith closes in on hundred

As long as Smith is there, England's chances seem miles away. The Aussie skipper moves to 87 at the end of the session, as Australia get to 225/4, leading by 61 runs.

Two big wickets for England before Lunch

England strike back to keep their hopes of a win alive. Root, the birthday boy, gifts himself a big prize with the wicket of Warner. He tosses the ball into the rough and invites Warner to have a go. Warner does. And he skies it to depart on 86. Soon after, Shaun Marsh edges behind to give England a second wicket. Game on, again.

Rain!

My, my. A small spell of rain and the players head off. Doesn't look too threatening. We should have play soon, unless the weather gods have other plans, of course.
