London Spirit were missing Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton and Ollie Pope today, and will hope that their performances only improve once those three are back in the team. The defending champions Oval Invincibles, meanwhile, couldn't have asked for a better start. That's all for now. Back tomorrow for more. Until then, it's goodbye from Sagar Chawla on behalf of Harish and Abhinav Guha!
Billings | Invincibles captain: It was pretty clinical. All the bowlers stepped up, assessed conditions early to use the pitch and hold the lengths. Obviously Zampa was incredible last year. Like for like swap (with Rashid). We've seen wrist spin is an incredible weapon in the middle overs. Just great to see him back to his best. As a wicketkeeper it's brilliant to keep to him as well. Have kept to him a few times before. He's got such clarity. Especially with the slope here and the drier surface, he can spin it both ways. It's more about giving him the intel about who is a reverse-sweeper and paddle-sweeper. That's what he wants to know. It was tricky (the pitch). I was surprised that they didn't try to get to 130 after losing a couple of wickets. Was suprised how hard they kept on coming. Sometimes you need some batsmanship. It's about setting up a platform and giving yourself a chance. Knew it wasn't going to be a wicket like the Oval. For us it's about the attitude and energy.
Rashid Khan | Hero of the Match: It was nice to get off to a winning start, it was good to perform for the side. (On the reason for his break after the IPL) Physically and mentally to get myself ready for the next competition, IPL is a long tournament, it helped me to think how to prepare going ahead. It was a good surface, there was spin on offer, when I was bowling I was trying to hit the right areas. I mixed things up and it worked out well. (On the importance of experience) It does help a lot, in a competition like this when things happen so quickly, it helps. I haven’t bowled in the last couple of months but the amount of cricket I have played in the last ten years, that really helps.
20:50 Local Time, 19:50 GMT, 01:20 IST: Oval Invincibles kickstart their campaign in style, swatting away the London Spirit in today's season opener. Majority of the work was done with the ball earlier in the evening, restricting the opposition to a total of 80 - the second-lowest in the Hundred. Rashid Khan and Sam Curran feasted on a pitch that was difficult for stroke-making. There was turn, the ball was stopping and there was low bounce too. In hindsight, the decision at the toss to bat first didn't help Spirit's cause and played perfectly into the hands of the Invincibles as they knew the target when it was their turn, and knew they didn't have to sweat too much about going at a run a ball.
Wood to Ferreira, SIX, that's how you finish a game that you've dominated from the start! Slower ball, Ferreira spots it early and wallops it over midwicket. Winning start for defending champions Oval Invincibles who win by six wickets and 31 balls to spare
Wood to Ferreira, no run, hacked to mid-on, not much timing and it rolls to the fielder
Wood to Ferreira, wide, banged in short, goes over Ferreira's head and it's a wide for height
Wood to Billings, 1 run, short of length delivery angling away outside off, Billings glides it down to third man
Wood to Billings, FOUR, help yourself! Down the leg-side, back of a length, Billings says thank you very much as he clips it fine past the keeper. Target into single digits
Turner to Ferreira, 1 run, uff this is properly hammered and Dawson somehow takes the sting off it at short extra cover. Fair play to him. Was overpitched and Ferreira absolutely creamed it
Turner to Ferreira, 2 runs, hacked on-side, it's a chase for long-on and he does well
Turner to Ferreira, no run, fired in by Turner, low full toss, Ferreira smears it down the pitch
Donovan Ferreira, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Turner to Sam Curran, out Bowled!! This one sneaks through! Pulls the length back from round the wicket, it slides on with the arm as Curran has a hack, keeps low and goes under him. Middle stump is pegged back. Sam Curran b Turner 14(9) [4s-3]
Turner to Sam Curran, THATS OUT!! Bowled!!
Turner to Sam Curran, FOUR, juicy off-break in the slot outside off, Curran reaches out and smokes it over mid-on. Length was quite full and he didn't have to worry about playing against the turn
Daniel Worrall to Sam Curran, 1 run, dug in short, Curran pulls it to deep midwicket
Daniel Worrall to Billings, 1 run, driven in the air, short extra cover dives across and it just escapes his clutches. Nervy start for Billings as he looks to drive on the up off his very first ball
Sam Billings, right handed bat, comes to the crease
Daniel Worrall to Jordan Cox, out Bowled!! Middle stump out of the ground! Premeditated scoop from Cox, steps across, exposes the stumps behind him and misses completely with Worrall bowling full and straight. On your way.. Jordan Cox b Daniel Worrall 5(9)
