Taking 10 wickets in Test cricket is hard graft. So when England's bowlers had beaten the bat 42 times in 87 overs, as they did on day two at Lord's according to CricViz, created 14 chances and watched five go down, they'd be forgiven for wondering if maybe, actually, franchise cricket really is the future. That the ECB's 100-ball format, while riddled with nonsense, is not so bad. After all, they'd have had their feet up in the bar by early afternoon and no one interested in cricket would have been there to watch such a chastening day's play.

Pakistan started on 50 for 1 and finished it 300 runs to the better for the loss of just seven more.
