Statistical highlights from Day 4 of the ongoing second Test between England and India at Edgbaston.

Gill leads the way

430 runs aggregated by Shubman Gill is now the second highest by a batter in a Test match, only behind Graham Gooch's 456 against India at Lord's in 1990. Overall, five batters have aggregated 400-plus runs in a Test till date, four of them while captaining the side, Kumar Sangakkara being the exception. Sunil Gavaskar held the Indian record previously: 344 against West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971.

Gill's 430 is also the ninth highest aggregate for anyone in a first-class game, and the second most by an Indian after Bhausaheb Nimbalkar's 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar at Pune in December 1948. It's also the second-highest in the 21st century after Angelo Perera's 432 for Nondescripts CC at Colombo (PSS) in 2019.

9 - Nine batters have recorded a double hundred and a hundred in the same Test, Gill being the latest entrant on this list. Only Sunil Gavaskar had done that for India previously, against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971, and it's the first such instance against England. Moreover, Gill is the second to achieve this in England and while captaining the side, after Gooch at Lord's in 1990.

2 - Gill also became just the second batter to register 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test after Allan Border did so against Pakistan in Lahore in 1980 (150* & 153).

2 - The India skipper also became the second to record a 250 and 150 in the same first-class game, joining Dhruv Shorey, who had got 252* and 150* for Delhi against Assam in Guwahati during the Ranji Trophy 2022/23.

3 - Three hundreds for Gill in his first two Tests as captain, a joint-record in the game's history, alongside Virat Kohli, who had got three on the bounce in Australia in 2014/15. Seven others got three each: Vijay Hazare, Jackie McGlew, Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar, Alastair Cook, Steven Smith and Dhananjaya de Silva.

585 runs by Gill is now the most by anyone in his maiden Test series as an India Test captain. Kohli held the record previously: 449 in two Tests as captain in Australia in 2014/15.

3 - Gill became the third Indian captain to record hundreds in both innings of a Test, after Gavaskar against West Indies (Kolkata, 1978) and Kohli against Australia (Adelaide, 2014). He is also the third Indian to record three hundreds in a Test series against England after Mohammad Azharuddin in 1984 (home) and Rahul Dravid in 2002 and 2011 (away).

1014 runs totalled by India across the two innings of this Test made it the fourth most in a match ever, well clear of their own previous best of 916 in Sydney in 2003/04.

4 - This was the fourth time India went past 400 in both innings of a Test; they had previously done this against Pakistan (Kolkata, 2004), against Sri Lanka (Ahmedabad, 2009) and against England (Rajkot, 2024). Overall, it was the 13th such instance by a Team in a Test match.

5 - Gill became the fifth batter to be involved in four century partnerships in a Test match, after Hanif Mohammad (vs WI, Bridgetown, 1958), Graham Gooch (vs IND, Lord's, 1990), Mark Taylor ( vs PAK, Peshawar, 1998) and Joe Root (vs PAK, Old Trafford, 2016).

4 - Gill combined with Ravindra Jadeja for 150-plus stands in both innings of the Test, becoming just the fourth pair to do so in the game's history. The previous three pairs were Paul Gibb and Eddie Paynter (184 & 168 vs SA, Johannesburg, 1938), Joe Burns and David Warner (161 & 237 vs NZ, Brisbane, 2015) and Dhananjaya de Silva and Kamindu Mendis (202 & 173 vs BAN, Sylhet, 2024).
