New Zealand started their World T20 2016 campaign on a winning note with a morale-boosting 47-run victory against India at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) stadium in Nagpur. On a track that offered considerable assistance for the spinners, The spin trio of Ish Sodhi, Nathan McCullum and Mitchell Santner bowled with flight and guile to pick up nine wickets between them and usurp the pre-tournament favourites.
On the other hand, Australia, too, would be pleased with the fact that they were able to pip South Africa in a three-match T20I series 2-1. However, they need to adjust to the slower tracks of India quickly to make an impact in the World T20. The Steven Smith-led Australian side might pick both spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar. It remains to be seen whether their opponents, New Zealand, will again select all three spinners. The boundaries in Dharamsala are shorter when compared to the VCA stadium and the ball travels faster as the ground is located at a high altitude.
There were reports that rain might play spoilsport. For now though, there are clear blue skies and both teams will be eager to get the game underway.
New Zealand are up and running! Australia have their backs against the wall already. The openers have put more than 50 and Guptill in particular, is threatening them. A lot will depend on leg-spinner Adam Zampa now.
New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat. The able pace duo of Boult and Southee again miss out. For Australia, Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson will open the batting and Aaron Finch has been dropped.
Teams:
New Zealand (Playing XI): Kane Williamson(c), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Corey Anderson, Ross Taylor, Mitchell Santner, Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi(w), Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan, Ish Sodhi
Australia (Playing XI): Usman Khawaja, Shane Watson, Steven Smith(c), David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, James Faulkner, Peter Nevill(w), Ashton Agar, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa
New Zealand are off to a flier! Martin Guptill is off to a flier! Poor start from Ashton Agar as he bowls two full tosses to the right-hander and he rightfully punishes it. He hits one more to finish the over! Australia need his wicket pretty soon.
They've thrown all predictions out of the window with this win...a place in semis almost confirmed.
