End of Australia's agony in the series opener

In the end, it was a complete mismatch between the two sides, with rain making things even worse for Australia. Set a target of 164 to win in 21 overs, the tourists botched their chase losing wickets up front. The Indian pacemen were on top of their money in the initial overs, before Kuldeep and Chahal drove the nails deep. In between, Maxwell entertained the crowd with an 18-ball stay, but that was not enough for Australia to overcome the Indian challenge.

Earlier, India were pushed back by some superior fast bowling from Pat Cummins and Nathan Coulter-Nile, before recovering through Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni's efforts. Whether chasing 282 would have been preferred or this, is a question worth brooding over. However, the tone has been set, now for the tourists to figure out for the remainder of the series - how to deal with wrist spin? As Australia find a way around that over the next few games, we will be there to keep you covered. Hope you enjoyed our coverage. Until next time, this is Shirshendu Roy signing off. Adios..

India win by 26 runs (DLS method)

Chahal adds a few more to his list..

Yuzvendra Chahal picks two more, first Matthew Wade, who was completely done in by the googly. Dhoni doesn't err with stumpings, does he? Mind you, he was dropped on a tough chance by the legspinner himself.

Another man who was given a reprieve was Pat Cummins, who was dropped by Rahane at long off. He too was done in by a sharp turner as a simple catch was grabbed by Bumrah at short third man. Mere formality now that India packs it off now..

Kuldeep has another one

Stoinis had been struggling and that's an end to all his pain. Goes for a slog sweep, didn't even factor for the kind of turn on it, miscued to deep mid-wicket. Another one bites the dust.. This is all over for Australia but we will still wait..

Maxwell time cut short

This was going to happen, at some point in time or the other.. Maxwell had to keep hitting with everybody else struggling from the other end. Misses a reverse sweep, and looked a little hassled. Got a six immediately but one shot too many, maybe. Drags one from well wide outside off and miscues it to long on, straight down the fielder's throat. Manish Pandey is not someone who would drop those..

Hang on, Maxwell decides to go maximum

So, Maxwell realises that there cannot be a way to counter Kuldeep with the straight bat. He decides to go for the kill. Slog sweep, heave, hammering straight down the wicket, everything on show in that over. 22 off that over, that was some hitting, one must admit. However, asking rate has come down from around 11 to 9 and a half.

Stats Buzz:

The aggregate of 40 runs for the first wickets by both sides combined in this ODI is the lowest in any match in India.

India - 11/3

Australia - 29/3

Kuldeep shows Warner the door

The genuine legbreak first, Warner looks to cut and sees the ball turn away. Next ball, scrambled seam and it skids through, too close for the cut, thick edge and superb take from MS. Kuldeep is pumped up but spare a thought for MS, too. What hands behind the stumps, at times, you tend to take his efforts for granted, don't you?

Harsha Bhogle on air, "There goes Warner, there go Australia as well?"

Pandya can't be kept away from the action

Change of pace works, again. Another cutter from Pandya, Head goes for a booming drive. He would go back and watch the replay, and would know how horrible a shot that was. Thick edge and the simplest of catches for MS. Three down now, pressure even more on Warner..

Smith falls next ball

So, the review if not earned back, has at least led to a wicket on the next ball. Change of pace at the last moment as Smith gets early into the shot, top edge goes high up in the air. Bumrah runs backward from short fine, and takes it behind him with fingers pointing skywards. That is as good a catch you would ever see.

Early review

The original decision - Not Out - stays, although I am not sure if the umpire thought on the same lines as the Ball Tracker. He might have thought that it pitched outside off. Not the prettiest of shuffles as he looks to clip it away, misses and is hit on the pad. Ball tracker shows it's an 'umpire's call' on the stumps. Just clipping the bails is not enough! Kohli is smiling away, he won't mind losing the review, it was worth taking.

Not so impressive, Mr. Debutant

Never the length to pull from, more so with the skiddy nature of Bumrah. Fraction short and Cartwright, who had been bogged down by a few dots, attempted the pull and found his off stump flying out of its place. He had been uncomfortable against both Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah, both of them swung it past Cartwright, even cutting him into halves with sharp inswingers. This was something we saw coming..

Finally, we're back

So, David Warner has a new partner at the top today, Hilton Cartwright, the debutant walks out with him. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has the ball in his hands, should also be the bowler to bowl the maximum of five tonight. Let's see..

*****

Revised target is 164 from 21 overs. Powerplay - 1-4, 5-17, 18-21. One bowler can bowl a maximum of 5 overs, others can bowl 4.

Team News

Virat Kohli did quite well in remembering the combinations, one must admit. No Dhawan as we already knew. Ajinkya Rahane returns at the top of the order, Manish Pandey is rewarded with the No. 4 spot. Two wrist spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal come in and of course, two pacers in the form of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah. Btw, Hardik Pandya will occupy the No. 7 spot.

For Australia, Hilton Cartwright will make his ODI debut. James Faulkner will look to revive his ODI career as he is back. Nathan Coulter-Nile is back too.

Toss time, folks

"It's a no-brainer," says Kohli, before adding, "We will bat first."

Warming up

So, Australia are back to India for their second tour of the year. During the first leg where they played just Tests, they offered India the only resistance they encountered throughout an otherwise successful-to-the-extent-of-being-boring home season. The Pune chapter will be their beacon of light and after a little hot-little cold Test series in Bangladesh where they had an adequate look-in of the conditions that could be on offer in India, Australia would look to go one step better than they did in the marathon ODI series of 2013.

Much water has flown under the bridge since then. Many of those who were subjected to the unreactive surfaces aren't travelling this time. But under the leadership of Smith, Australia have been a different beast altogether, and why not, Smith's ruthlessness can only bring the best out of you.

Talking of captains, you can't keep Virat Kohli out of the equation at all, more so if it is the white-ball version. The Indians mauled the Sri Lankans only recently and Australia would know that they are in for a hard time..

I am Shirshendu Roy and I will be with you throughout the course of the game..
