Build Up

Day 3 of the Canberra Test between Australia and Sri Lanka followed a similar pattern to what we have seen for the rest of the series so far. There were a few moments when Sri Lanka put up a spirited show only to be snatched away by the home side.

Eventually, the tourists were bowled out for a mere 215 in the first essay. Mitchell Starc, who has been struggling for form, bowled with pace and venom to take a five-for. Despite having a lead in excess of 300, Australia decided to bat again, with Usman Khawaja himself to a much needed century. Australia declared their second innings at 196 for 3, leaving Sri Lanka with a mammoth 516 to chase down.

There was also an incident involving Kusal Perera where the middle order batsman was clonked on the side of the grille by Richardson. He became the second batsman in Sri Lanka's innings to retire hurt after Karunaratne. Incidentally, Karunaratne walked out to bat replacing Kusal at the crease. The left-handed batsman also received a rousing applause as he made his way out of the pavilion.

Meanwhile, Kusal has been kept under observation in the hospital after complaining of dizziness.

Today is also Sri Lanka's independence day. Maybe that would inspire the touring side!
