13:00 Local Time, 12:00 GMT, 17:30 IST: An outstanding session for India has suddenly turned into a balanced one right on the stroke of lunch. Two quick wickets for England has ruined what was a remarkable start for India. On a pitch that offered plenty of swing and seam movement, the Indian openers batted expertly. They were patient, left the ball well and made sure they cashed in when opportunities to score came by. England were left frustrated for the most part. The batters offered no chances when they bowled well and the moment they got a little too eager, they were humbled. Rahul played a series of soothing cover-drives and the opening stand crossed fifty and beyond at a good pace.
Just when it looked like India would get through the morning unscathed, however, Carse tempted Rahul into chasing a wide outswinger and had him caught at first slip. Then Sudharsan, the debutant, fell right into Stokes’ trap at the stroke of lunch. Eager to get bat on ball and get off the mark in Test cricket, he was strangled down leg, leaving India 92/2 at Lunch. We’ll be back shortly for the second session.
Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! He's been caught down leg. This is a brilliant plan from England. They had leg slip and kept bowling on the pads. Stokes added a leg gully as well before this ball. The plan was to make the batter doubt the flick/glance. Sai was very mindful of the men behind and curbed himself on the flick. The result is an edge for Smith to the right. Out for nought on debut. Sai Sudharsan c Jamie Smith b Stokes 0(4)
Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, no run, appeal for LBW/caught behind. Definitely pitched down leg, definitely no bat. Inswinger down leg on good length, Sai misses the glance. Off the thigh pad. They have a man at leg slip and they want to put the doubt on the glance
Stokes to Sai Sudharsan, no run, fullish and angling away, Sai looks to defend, edge rolls along the ground to the left of third slip
Stokes to Jaiswal, 1 run, pushed to mid-off
Brydon Carse to Sai Sudharsan, no run, oh soft check for LBW as Brydon Carse swings it back into LHB. Sai defends, looked like bat-first
Sai Sudharsan, left handed bat, comes to the crease
Brydon Carse to Rahul, out Caught by Root!! This time he couldn't resist and edges it to first slip. This is why they keep bowling full and wide in England. You've got to the risk the drive and bowl full, said Stuart Broad in his pitch report. That's exactly what Brydon Carse has done. Followed up a short ball with a wide and full outswinger. KL let it go. The next ball is again fuller and slightly closer. The outswing takes a thick edge and Root catches it nicely, around chest high and reverse-cup style moving to his right at first slip. All that classy batting, all that concentration goes to dust in a millisecond. That's Test cricket for you. KL walks off disappointed after a very good innings. Rahul c Root b Brydon Carse 42(78) [4s-8]
Brydon Carse to Rahul, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
Brydon Carse to Rahul, no run, now he teases with a wide full ball with some outswing, KL smart enough to understand the trap and lets it pass
Brydon Carse to Rahul, no run, made him jump there! Short at the body, KL had to rise and fend to leg with one hand. Thankfully not a hard blow to the glove or the body
Brydon Carse to Rahul, no run, fullish delivery, KL pushes it to the off-side
Brydon Carse to Rahul, no run, short of length delivery, Rahul defends off the back foot
Stokes to Jaiswal, no run, oh false drive! Full and outside off stump, Jaiswal leans forward to drive through cover, but the bat turned in his hands and ball rolls to mid-off to find the fielder
"Woakes warming up again, another spell likely before Lunch" says Kaushik who's at Headingley
Stokes to Jaiswal, no run, on the pads. Full and swinging back in, Jaiswal misses the flick and gets hit on the pad. Missing leg though. Sent back when he was keen on a risky run
