One-sided match yesterday, a thrilling close encounter today. Tune in tomorrow for Northern Superchargers vs Welsh Fire. For now, goodbye...
Tymal Mills | Match Hero: We managed to somehow get to a position where it was in our hands and one hit away. Credit to Manchester, they bowled really well for the best part of the innings. Craig O (Overton) pulled some big hits out at the end. Always great to win close games like that. Hopefully it keeps us in good stead for the rest of the competition. Bat on ball was obviously the main thing, we needed to hit every ball and scamper as best as we can. We managed to get a couple of boundaries. Craig - that was a brilliant knock from him. (On his bowling) It was a wicket that rewarded you for hitting the pitch hard. We may have been a bit full in the powerplay at the start but once we dropped our lengths back and hit the pitch hard, there was awkward bounce there. We tried to communicate that as quickly as possible. We were happy at the halfway with that score, we were confident of chasing it and we probably made a little bit harder wok than what we would have liked. Just a win is really important in an 8-game group stage, you can't afford too many losses. To win a nice and early one was brilliant. Hopefully that gives us some really good momentum going into our next game.
21:17 Local Time, 20:17 GMT, 01:47 IST: Southern Brave kickstart their campaign with a nervy 1-wicket win. On a track where stroke-making wasn't easy, they restricted the hosts to 131/4. Salt got off to a flier and scored 60 off 41 but the Originals lost their way after that with most of their big-hitters struggling for timing. Chapman's cameo towards the end ensured that the home team posted a decent total. In reply, Southern Brave lost captain Vince early who was cleaned up Baker. The hosts conceded just 29 runs off the powerplay. Roy provided some impetus by smashing 4 6 4 against Anderson. The Originals fought back by picking wickets at regular intervals. With 26 runs needed off the last 11 deliveries, the home team were the firm favourites. But Southern Brave pulled off an awesome win. Mills struck a crucial six and that was followed by Craig Overton's 6 4 4 vs Baker. The equation came down to run a ball but there was more drama with Mills holing out to the deep. With 3 needed off the last 2 deliveries, Topley (No. 11 batter) struck a four to take his team home.
Gregory to Topley, FOUR, Topley does it for Southern Brave. Length ball outside off and the No. 11 batter cuts hard to beat the diving backward point fielder to his right. Races away to the fence and Southern Brave win by 1 wicket
Reece Topley, right handed bat, comes to the crease
3 runs | 2 balls | 1 wicket in hand. Buttler has removed his right glove
Gregory to Tymal Mills, out Caught by Scott Currie!! Holes out! The Old Trafford crowd absolutely love it. Length ball outside off, Mills makes room and slashes hard. Makes very good contact but he's struck that flat and straight to deep cover. Currie holds onto the catch calmly. Tymal Mills c Scott Currie b Gregory 8(4) [6s-1]
Gregory to Tymal Mills, THATS OUT!! Caught!!
3 runs | 3 balls.
Gregory to Craig Overton, 1 run, back of a length, Overton moves leg-side and miscues the heave it to long-on
4 runs | 4 balls
Gregory to Craig Overton, no run, 78mph, back of a length, chopped back to the bowler. A dot ball and that results in a big roar from the crowd
Just 4 needed off the last 5 deliveries and Gregory will bowl the final set
Sonny Baker to Tymal Mills, 1 run, shortish ball, Mills makes room and splices it to point
Craig Overton has a word with Tymal Mills
Sonny Baker to Craig Overton, 1 run, short delivery, Overton gloves the pull to fine leg
Sonny Baker to Craig Overton, FOUR, length ball angling in and Overton heaves it between deep midwicket and deep square leg. Last 4 deliveries - 6 6 4 4
Sonny Baker to Craig Overton, FOUR, dropped! Fullish delivery, Overton miscues the lofted off-drive. Extra cover and mid-off converge, Currie gets to the ball even as the latter is very close to him. Currie fails to hold onto the catch and to make matters worse, he's parried it away to the fence
Sonny Baker to Craig Overton, SIX, 88mph, full and in the slot, Overton gets under it and tonks it over long-on
Equation: 20 runs | 10 balls.
