Born August 23, 1921, Tetbury, Sam Cook was one of the doyens of Gloucestershire cricket, capturing as many as 1782 first-class wickets in 506 matches. The slow left-arm spinner won his only Test cap in 1947 against South Africa at Nottingham, where he went wicket-less, conceding 127 runs. After his playing career, Sam Cook served as a first-class umpire from 1971 to 1986. He died in his home-town of Tetbury in September 1996.
