What have KXIP done?

Imagine being Mayank Agarwal now, thinking about his dismissal when the game was in the bag after so much struggle. What a Day 2 of IPL we've had. Pure madness. Kagiso Rabada - DC's best bet in Super Over - had KXIP down to 2 for 2 by the third ball to turn the tables in a complete different direction from where Mayank had left the game at.

Rabada first got Rahul with a pace short ball that the KXIP skipper top-edged only as far as Axar Patel at midwicket. He then sent Pooran's off-stump for a walk as the West Indian attempted a wild swing and got nowhere close to connecting bat with ball. There was no more drama in store as DC walked to their target of three to sneak through in what turned out to be quite the thriller.

UPDATE on Ashwin:We saw the spinner in real pain when he walked off and had a sling around his arm. But Shreyas Iyer says he spoke to him in the dressing room and he said he was ready to go for the next game. Iyer still reckons it remains to be seen how bad it is and for the medical staff to judge.

SUPER OVER!

OH KXIP and DC, what have you done! What a final over that! Stoinis started by thinking he could bluff Mayank with a slower ball and Mayank slapped it back for an authoritative straight six. He then backed away and carved open the field to dispatch a full ball to the extracover fence. The game seemed done and dusted at that point, even as Stoinis pulled off a slower ball. With 1 to get from 2 what could've possibly gone wrong? Well, everything.

Mayank's had one of those nights where you can only praise him for his efforts to navigate past a batting collapse and orchestrate a heist for the ages. But... with only 1 to get from 2, he went for a big hit - or a glory shot, you'd say if you're a harsh critic. It was bad because he found Hetmyer in the deep, leaving Jordan to get 1 off the last ball. Stoinis created a bit of drama by not bowling the ball after completing his run up. When he eventually delivered, Jordan ended up flicking the ball straight to Rabada at short square leg.

The pendulum is swinging...

What one big over can do to a T20! From 42 off 18, the equation is now down to a very gettable 25 off 12. This is fabulous batting from Mayank Agarwal. Mohit began the 18th over with a go-to ball in such a situation - a full and wide ball. Unfortunately for him, the India Test opener comes with a full range of strokes in his arsenal. Mayank got down on one knee and slicked the ball over deep backward point for a six. It was almost as if Mayank, with his years of experience, was expecting that delivery. Mohit went to the other end of the spectrum with a back-of-the-hand slower ball. Mayank saw it coming from a long distance, set himself up and creamed it over long off for another one. What an over. The pressure is starting to shift towards DC. Big, big penultimate over coming up from Rabada here.

Mayank holding it together

So th equation is now down to KXIP needing 42 off 18. DC scored 58 from the same position. Strap on, this is going to be fun!

Gowtham cameo done

How about that for a live blogger's curse? Seriously though, with 60 to get from half the number of balls, innovation and risk was the order of the day. Gowtham tried to give himself room outside the leg stump to deal with Rabada's pace, which was 142.7 kmph on this occasion. The cheeky attempt to guide it down to third man didn't work out, and he instead ended up nicking the ball to the keeper. KXIP are six down.

Mayank, Gowtham keeping KXIP alive

The Karnataka boys have stitched together a solid partnership for the sixth wicket. They've added 43 off 5 overs since Sarfaraz's dismissal. It brings down the equation to 60 off the last five overs. Can they

55/5 in 10 overs

DC refuse to let KXIP catch a break here. The pressure was rising after the PowerPlay to find a move on. DC had Iyer and Pant steer their side briefly out of a similar situation but Sarfaraz fails to play that role here. He looked to clear the straight fence - like the DC duo did repeatedly - but can't hit it long enough. A tidy take from Prithvi Shaw at long-on reduced KXIP to 55 for 5 in 10 overs as Mayank Agarwal watches on helplessly from the non-striker's end.

The commentators have said that R Ashwin has dislocated his shoulder while diving in the field and not in the middle now. Rahane is in as a replacement. We've got to wait and watch for an official confirmation.

30/0 to 35/4

What's happening here? KXIP were going fine without taking risks in the PowerPlay. They were poised to slowly snatch the game away in the middle-overs but they've messed things up for themselves before that. Two of those four wickets were nearly unplayed seeds - from Mohit to Rahul and Ashwin to Pooran, but both Karun and Maxwell should've done better.

Wishful thinking or real possibility?

Rishabh Pant's playground?

It's been a tough 18 month-period if you're Rishabh Pant. In and out of the Indian side, booed by your own crowd and dwindling form in white-ball cricket. The lockdown actually helped him catch a break, but here's IPL now, so what can we expect? One thing's for certain,. from numbers in the last two seasons, that IPL has been his playground.

What's on the loop...

A lot of things about this IPL is out of the ordinary, starting with it being played in UAE. For fans, all the waiting time has perhaps been spent refreshing social media timelines for any crumbs of footage of their favourite players. Every team has done its part, some better than the rest, but KXIP fans were showered with some pleasant, nostaligic surprise recently...

Team Gayle or Team Pooran?

This is going to be a tough side to take - Gayle had a good season last year and is in general a bonafied T20 star. Pooran is expected to have a breakout season after emerging as one of the most exciting batting talents in recent times. Which side are you on? Prelude - This season, surely?

Year after year, preview writers around the country and the world pen in high anticipation of one of the outliers breaking in to club of the elites and etching their name on the trophy for the very first time. After all, the last first-timer winner came in 2016, after which CSK and MI have juggled it between them in their own little two-team league of absolute supremacy.

For the two teams in action today - Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab - the move up towards the elite has just not happened. They're two sides that have existed from the first season, have seen their squad ripped apart and put together time and again, but haven't achieved the desired result... yet. So here's another chance to start afresh, with a blank slate and the hope of rewriting their fate in the history of the tournament.

Delhi Capitals will be the one to take heart from their slow but noticeable progression over the last two seasons. They even made it till the knockouts last season under Ricky Ponting's tutelege, and there are signs (and signings!) that they could take another step forward this season.

KXIP's case is slightly more intriguing. They flew off the stands in the first half of the 2018 season. But they then fell flat with similar intensity and wound up seventh somehow with just five wins. The same number of wins only took them a spot higher last season. With a new leader - perhaps India's best T20 player currently - in KL Rahul and a new coach in Anil Kumble, it is understandable if there's optimism emanating from the KXIP camp.

One common issue for both these two teams is identifying which four foreign players are the best to pick. In a couple of hours from now, we'll get a glimpse of how they're thinking...
